Our story is not unlike many other mother invented products: you need something – you look and can’t find that something – so you create it yourself. Or, your Mom does.

New parents quickly learn about the wonders of swaddling their new baby but no one tells you how quickly they grow right out of traditional 30 inch receiving blankets. My first child could break free from her blankets when she was just a few weeks old. I was having a tough time handling the emotional roller coasters and lack of sleep that accompany those first few weeks at home. Then, my daughter started to wake up frantic and screaming because she broke free from her little swaddling blanket. She still needed that tight swaddle to help her sleep and I couldn’t find blankets large enough to do the job. After sharing my desperation with my Mom, an extremely talented artist and sewer, she also went looking. When she couldn’t find larger blankets… she made one.

I swaddled my little girl in the new blanket and to all of our tremendous relief; it kept her secure beyond her initial wrigglings. She was so comfortable that she immediately began sleeping through the night! We all finally slept through the night! This great big blanket easily swaddled her throughout her growth. She never outgrew it. These blankets are so well made that they held up beautifully for my next child. He was over 10 pounds at birth so these were the only blankets that would contain him.

We started giving our extra large receiving blankets to all of our expecting friends and we really started to hear how much everyone loved them. Once the swaddling days were over, parents continued using these blankets: in the stroller, in the crib, as a play mat, at the beach, in the car… many said it was the only blanket they ever used and wished they could share them with their friends as well.

We realized that new parents everywhere needed our extra large receiving blankets. With the helpful nudge of a dear friend, Susie’s Swaddlers was created to meet that need.

My mom continued to sew our blankets until we were devastated to learn that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was no longer able to continue making these beautiful blankets by herself, but together we continued to plan and build our new company. Creating Susie’s Swaddlers became a part of recovery and our work and passion allowed us to focus on something positive and exciting together. Susan is now in remission and getting stronger and healthier every day.

Our wonderful blankets are still handmade with exceptional care by an extremely talented new mother and two top notch Grandmas we are proud to have as part of our team.
